Washington Rock

From the Watchung Mountains, the McGaffin kids could gaze out from George Washington's old Revolutionary War lookout — and on a clear day, spot New York City in the distance.

Washington Rock (site and adventures) Washington Rock. There was a range of high hills called the Watchung Mountains. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington spent a lot of time in this area and set up an observation post on one of the high points. This was later called "Washington Rock". There was a road that ran almost to the top and a trail that went the rest of the way. It was an easy climb to the monument. From there you could see New York City. We often looked out and could see the Red Coats in the fields.
