Summer 1964
From ‘The Adventures of The McGaffin’s As We Remember Them’ — a family memoir begun July 17, 2003.
Summer 1964. Now that we had the Volkswagen Bus, we planned to take a trip out to Colorado to visit Janice. Well, it turns out that was not possible because Karen, Lynn and possibly Dave came down with the mumps. It was decided that Sam and I would take a camping trip to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, which is a state park alongside the Mississippi. We packed the car with the cooler, belongings and my old small pup tent. Away we went. On our arrival, we set up the campsite. I don't remember too many of the details, but I do remember that we had been doing some sight-seeing and there was a hard rain. When we came back, we found that the tent was full of water. We spent the night in the car. In the morning, while I was in the restroom, Sam decided that he would help by draining the excess water from the cooler. In the process the cooler tipped too far and rolled down a small hill. Some of the food fell out. When I came back, Sam was sitting on the cooler waiting to tell me that our next meal was at the bottom of the hill. Overall we had a great and adventuresome time.
