1976 - The First Trip to Disney World

Two families hit the campgrounds at Disney World, where the four oldest kids stormed off in disgust at being dragged to "Mickey Mouse land" — only to return at lunchtime with a suspiciously different attitude.

1976 The First Trip to Disney World

We and the Suby's decided that we would like to try camping at the new Disney World in Orlando. We traveled down there and met at a Yogi Bear camping ground just outside the park for the first night. The camp ground was built on an old orange grove. When we arrived, we were told that we could pick any of the oranges. We went out into the groves and the oranges looked quite bad. We decided anyway to try some, and we found that in spite of the way they looked they really tasted very good. The next day we moved into the Disney campground called Fort Wilderness. We set up our trailer and the Suby's set up their tent. It was a very nice facility. We had our tickets, which in those days were limited to a certain number of rides, and at that time only the Magic Kingdom was open. Our ticket package gave us one free meal each day. The four oldest were pretty annoyed about going to Mickey Mouse land and they did not want to be associated with us. They went off by themselves muttering about being at this place for kids. We told them where to meet us for lunch and they took off. After we enjoyed ourselves with the four younger boys, we met the others at the designated spot. We were very surprised to see them all smiling and wearing Disney T shirts. After that we all had a great time. This was the start of many future visits.
